Heidi and Finn Urban Hoodie - Zipped Up

Ever get an idea in your head that you think will be totally awesome and get sort of obsessed with it?

No? Just me?

Anyway, a few weeks ago, I got it in my head the Urban Hoodie would be AWESOME with a zipper instead of buttons. This week, I took a crack at it, and I LOVE it. Usually, when I go off-pattern with clothing, it doesn't turn out so well, but this turned out exactly how I imagined it would. I felt like an evil sewing genius when I was done.

I used a pretty stretchy houndstooth (I think it is some sort of rayon blend) from Joann's for the outer, and the lining is a solid black interlock. I cut the 18 month size, and it is perfect for Sawyer right now, with plenty of growing room.

I really don't think I could love this pattern any more. I rarely make the same thing more than once, but this pattern is great, and I love to make it. It comes together quickly and is so stinkin' cute.

Sawyer and I took advantage of the warm weather (60 degrees!) to take some pictures outside. At first, he wasn't so sure about this "fresh air" thing.

Then he spotted some geese, and apparently, geese are awesome to a 7-month-old.

After that, he was a happy camper, and ready to show off his brand new teeth!

I took some pictures along the way as I installed the zipper, but unfortunately the only camera available was my cell phone camera. I'm going to try to make them presentable to show you how I installed the zipper here. Or, maybe I'll just make another one. That is how much I love this pattern.

Edited to add: I posted a tutorial for installing the zip here.

  2. I can't even articulate how much I love this!! That looks like a chunkier than usual zipper, and it looks so punk rock with that houndstooth fabric. Wow! Love it! Those smiles are so great!

  3. Ok, the hoodie is cute, but the baby is adorable! What a great way to add a zipper off center like that.

  6. Awesome! I've got this pattern too. I love the button version but I think that yours is even better. Can't wait for the tute to make one for my little boy.

  7. The zipper rocks! And I love that this makes it easier for littles ones to self-dress. We made the mistake of buying our 3.5 year old a winter coat that buttons up. Every time we come home he tries to get the coat off and nearly busts the buttons.

Sawyer is crazy cute here (as usual!). And look at those teeth!

Please show us how to put the zipper into this hoodie!

And I am kind of obsessed with houndstooth right now and I am dying over that fabric!!! I doubt my Joanns carries it though, we never have anything that cool!

  17. Emily, we live near UA...but the park is on our way to the zoo! And our church meets in Dublin, so we've had a couple Cub Scout functions there, too. :)
